Another week down......

So in the MTC, Sister Rogers would always say this one quote and it drove me crazy and I was like yeah, yeah, we know Sister Rogers. The quote is:

“On a mission the highs are higher, the lows are lower, and the time in between is non-existent.”

The quote is true. SO STINKING TRUE!

Exhibit A:

After sites on Tuesday, we didn’t have district meeting because zone conference was later in the week so we went to visit Sampson. **Interruption: I know that I sound like I’m schizophrenic because I’m always saying “we did this” and “we went there” but the fact is I always have Sister Park with me anywhere I go and we’re always together so I’m not a psycho. The end** SAMPSON WASN’T THERE! They commonly say here “He flamed us.” I don’t really like the saying but whatever, it’s what happened. He didn’t show.

SAMPSONNNNNN ARE YOU FO’ RILL?!

Sister Pennington
It was the biggest bummer! I was legitimately sick to my stomach when we left. NOOO SATAN! Go the heck away! Sister Park & I were so depressed when we left there. But that night we ate at Sister Pennington’s house. It was hilarious! She had like her whole family come over, all of whom are non-members, so there was like seriously 25 black people and me and Sister Park! I LOVED IT. In fact, I was in the same room as a guy with a legit grill. I was trying to think of some polite way to be like “Um, hey, can I get a picture with you?” but I couldn’t really come up with one. Haha too bad! I don’t know that I will ever be able to have that experience again in my life. It’s really neat to be in a different culture than your own. Kia even rapped for us! I’m going to attach the video I took of it so you can see all the people I was with. Oh, and if Sampson ditching us was not enough bad news for the day, Lisa Marik (the lady we contacted last Sunday & set an appointment with) had left us a message when we were leaving Kia’s house. It said, “Um Sisters, I don’t really think you need to come back because I believe in God but I don’t believe in Jesus Christ and you can’t change my mind. I don’t really want to be a missionary either.” GREAT. Icing on our crap cake! One of the sisters that went home when I came out wrote this song about investigators…I only know one part of it because all the sisters are always singing it. Iit really applied on Tuesday:
Camaria, Sister Pennington's grandaughter

Rip my heart out!
Can’t take it anymore…
It’s been shattered
Splattered on the floor.

Needless to say, it was a rough day.

Wednesday, we were at sites all day. It was a long day because we fasted for Sampson and soo it was hot and we were giving tours and we were hungry and thirsty. But it was good. I got to take this awesome couple from Allen on tour and I really liked them because they were prepared to be there. Sometimes people don’t appreciate the sacredness of Kirtland and it’s a little sad. I got to give a tour with Sister Carter too because Sister Park & Sister Hill were both not feeling well. Sister Carter only has about 2 transfers left so she knows A LOT about Kirtland. It was neat to go with someone different just because everyone has different styles of teaching and it’s neat to see how she did each of the rooms we went through.

On Thursday, we had zone conference! It was fun and spiritually uplifting. Duh. We got to watch a couple clips from the District 2. Basically, the Church went around for 3 weeks and filmed a district in the California San Diego mish. Like filmed all of them, sun up to sun down, and they show them to us as examples of good and bad ways of teaching/ going about things. They are so great! I love watching them. After ZC, we tried to stop by Sampson again. He wasn’t there.  Boooooo. And that day Sister Park was feeling really bad and I could tell so we cancelled dinner & correlation and went home for the rest of the evening.

Alright, so all of the sisters that serve at the sites in Kirtland (so..not the Johnson Farm in Hiram) are in the Kirtland zone. However, we can’t all just abandon sites for the day to go to zone conference so it gets split. Half of us go to the Kirtland ZC and the other half go to the Cleveland ZC. I went to the Kirtland one on Thursday and so on Friday, we had to be at sites all day so the other sisters could go to Cleveland. It was a good day at sites. We only had 1 tour all day so we had a lot of time on phones…but I got 7 referrals! The miracle of the day came in the form of Jim Jump from Pocatello, ID. One of his friends had left him as a referral…so I called and left a message for him to see if he would like a free Book of Mormon. The card said that he’d had discussions with his friend about the church and that he was dating an inactive woman so I figured he probably already knew about the church and didn’t want anything to do with it. FALSE. He called me back and wanted the BoM. YAYYYYYYYY! It was a neat experience. We found out on Friday that Sister Hill from Roseville, CA was going home the next day. She’s been really sick ever since she came out on her mission a month before I did. She’s thrown up every day and had other issues and so really for her little body, it was best that she go home. But I miss her! She was so cute and always making jokes even though she was always in a lot of pain.
Sister Hill

On Saturday, sites was really busy. We took 3 tours! The last one I took with Sister Mazza because Sister Park started not feeling well again and Sister Mazza’s companion Sister Decker is sick too. In fact, we found out that she’s going home today or tomorrow. She actually was called to the Phillippines and she served there for a few months but her body started hating her and destroying itself so she got sent home. Then she rested and got better (so she thought) at home for 4 months and she was then reassigned to Kirtland. She’s been here for almost 2 transfers but she can’t handle the pain anymore and she knows she gave it her all. SAD DAY! All of these people are going home.  Miracle of the day? Blanche Tabor. The card said she was Baptist and very involved in her church so I wasn’t expecting much but she said it would be fine for the missionaries to drop off a Book of Mormon to her. SWEET!

Sunday…was so good! President Sorensen came and spoke in my ward. All of sacrament meeting was centered on missionary work. There was a training meeting with the ward council as well and it was so good. We talked a lot about how to implement the new ward mission process. It seemed to put a fire under Bishop Harmon that wasn’t there before. He even offered to come out and teach with us this week so I really hope that happens! We were at sites again yesterday afternoon. After 2 full days there, I’m not going to lie it was really hard to find motivation. Thankfully, we did have 1 tour and a fireside! Every 3rd Sunday of the month, there’s an investigator fireside held at the VC. This awesome convert of 4 months named Leonard spoke. HE WAS SO FREAKING COOL! He was like almost 7 foot, black, and awesome. He even said,( and I quote) “I’m wholesome like Raisin Bran now.” SO LEGIT.

So this week we had very little time in our area due to zone conference and Sister Park’s illness. It made me really excited to have time with our investigators this week! I missed seeing them. It was a hard week but you’ve got to have some of those to appreciate the really good weeks.

In fact, this morning I read President Uchtdorf’s talk called “Your Happily Ever After” from the General Young Womens’ Broadcast in March. He says, “Adversity teaches us things we cannot learn otherwise. Adversity helps us to develop a depth of character that comes in no other way….My dear young sisters, you need to know that you will experience your own adversity. None is exempt. You will suffer, be tempted, and make mistakes. You will learn for yourself what every heroine has learned: through overcoming challenges come growth and strength. It is your reaction to adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop.”

I love that. So much depends on our attitudes! Don’t worry, I’m not going to let last week get me down. This week is going to be awesome…I can feel it in my bones.

Oh, I want to tell you one more thing. I shop at this place called Aldi. It’s the bomb.com! It’s this grocery store that’s way cheap and nothing is name brand. Today I got carrots, cucumbers, strawberries, bananas, tomatos, clementines, chicken breasts, 3 boxes of cereal, a tub of yogurt, shredded cheese, a block of cheese and a half-gallon of milk all for $30. It is the best place ever! And while we were at that place, the lady in front of us in line kept staring at my name tag. She was sweet, this Hispanic lady and she 2 kids with her, and she was like “Sister Webb…is that like for a religion?” So we talked to her just a little while and gave her a pass-along card! Then the clerk was like “Oh, so do I not get one?!” so we gave him one too! Ha! Then we were telling him where the church was and the lady came back to listen in ‘cuz she wanted to know. It was awesome. I’m praying that both of them call for the DVD and we get to deliver it to them!

Oh, by the way, I started writing my own rap about being a missionary. A video will be created in the next couple weeks. GET EXCITED!

I think that’s all I’ve got for this week. I love you all so much and miss you but there is no doubt in my mind that I am exactly where I’m supposed to be.
Sister Alicia Webb

P.S. Tell Aly that I didn’t forget about her birthday even though I forgot to write it on the letter I sent her last Monday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AL!!!

Roomate pencils from Sonhee

Meet Tiwi. I hate him! Oftentimes, we yell "Shut it Tiwi!" and other various phrases at him when he says "speeding violation." It's makes him bearable.

  1. Hey Alicia! Once again, love reading your letters! It's so fun to finally have a missionary in my family to follow!!! So, I'm teaching a lesson to all the YW in a few weeks (first Sunday in Sept.), and it is on "Preparing to Teach Others" - it's all about preparing to share the gospel and what we can do to be ready for the opportunities that will come to us. So, who better to ask for help on this then you (if you have some time, that is)! I would love any input you have on things like -how the YW can increase their knowledge of the gospel - how they can develop skills now that will help them teach the gospel (and what skills those are) and any other thoughts you might have. If you have some time, maybe you could put a few thoughts in your mom's next letter and she can pass it on to me? Keep up the good work!!!

  3. Oh, we so need to come and visit you! Sadly, Saturdays are booked for the next few weeks, but hopefully in 3 Saturdays we will be there! At least twice a week Ben asks when we will visit you! Although, we will not be the tour with the quiet children. :) We will help you to be guided by the Spirit to judge which portions of Kirtland to share!!! Love the talk from Pres. Uchtdorf! I'm using that as my lesson for RS on Fast Sunday! Love reading your experiences (and checking up on you through Elder Thornton!) and we continue to pray for you!
